**Carve**'s setting is near-future (likely 2035-ish, although for setting reasons it will feel more like what we might imagine 2060-ish to look, at least in some aspects of tech), on something recognisably like Earth, but probably with different geopolitical underpinnings that the author isn't inclined to invent in any detail ahead of time. [[:magic|Spellcasting]] is tightly regulated. Governments don’t super like to see it, mostly for social security reasons when a spell inevitably fails to pan out and someone either loses a limb or dies and might leave family behind, but they’d be stupid to completely outlaw it. [[:magic:Sorcerers]] are typically required to first study medicine, which tends to disabuse most would-be sorcerers from the appeal. But the profession does pay well for those who aren’t put off by it, much like e.g. a body guard is a perfectly acceptable job to have, but has a higher than usual chance of getting you killed. Since no wars have traditionally been fought or decided with magic, there is no stigma associated with sorcerers or sorcery, beyond the part where people might doubt your sanity for picking the job.
